General Summary:

This incumbent is an integral member of the design team for executive compensation programs for Unum. Accountable and responsible for contributing to the ongoing development, management and communication of global executive compensation programs. This position is also responsible for developing executive compensation solutions within a global framework.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the design, development, and implementation of executive compensation related plans and programs. Also drafts and/or contributes to drafting of ongoing communications to plan participants to increase the perceived value of executive compensation offerings.

  • Serves as executive compensation team technical lead and project manager for annual proxy planning and drafting process. This includes coordinating production process with legal and corporate communications. Also serves as the primary contact for internal audit’s annual review of the proxy.

  • Responsible for the preparation of all proxy statement compensation tables (executive and director) as well as related footnotes. Responsible for drafting language regarding executive compensation programs for inclusion in proxy statement. Additionally, provides direction to an intern on the proxy project.

  • Collaborate with Legal and Investor Relations in shareholder outreach efforts with respect to executive compensation programs.

  • Responsible for the annual review of market data for all senior executives.

  • Responsible for the production process of meeting materials for the Human Capital Committee (HCC) of the Board of Directors as well as the Nomination and Remuneration Committee (NRC) of the UK Board. This includes preparation of executive compensation materials and the development/updating of the HCC and NRC calendars. This involves interaction with the HCC’s independent consultant for certain Committee materials.

  • Responsible for regular external studies to determine competitiveness of executive compensation programs. Model financial impact of changes to equity compensation plans.

  • Serve as liaison with Benefits area for executive benefits.

  • Responsible for the administration of inactive deferred compensation programs. This includes reconciliation of the accounts at year-end as well as partnering with finance for required reporting.

  • Monitor executive, accounting, tax and other compensation-related laws and trends and recommend changes to our programs as appropriate. Partner with appropriate internal parties to ensure internal program compliance.

  • Participates in rotation/special projects within the global total rewards organization.

  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance or Accounting; CPA preferred

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience

  • Professional certification a plus (e.g., certified equity professional)

  • Demonstrated ability to influence others and drive results

  • Strong technical and analytical ability

  • Strong organizational, time management and planning skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong collaboration skills and facilitation skills

  • Knowledge in Accounting and Tax preferred

  • Flexibility to work well under pressure managing multiple priorities and tight deadlines.

  • Proven project management skills.

  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative in setting own direction within broad parameters

  • Demonstrated ability to gain the attention and respect of sr. level leaders.

  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

$89,900.00-$161,800.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not.
