JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
Seeking motivated postdoctoral researchers to join an NIH-funded interdisciplinary research project in Biomedical Engineering at Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology. This is a highly interdisciplinary project involving human experiments and computational modeling to understand multiscale influences of muscle and neural systems to postural stability impairments in Parkinson¿s disease and related disorders. The proposed studies will also complement our NIH funded-research examining multiscale mechanisms of proprioceptive signals and their dysfunction in neurological disorders such as sensory neuropathy, Parkinson¿s disease, and others. Work collaboratively with to experimentally and/or computationally identify key muscle and neural feedback components contributing to postural instability in Parkinson¿s disease. ¿ Design, execute, analyze, and publish in at least two of the three following areas: - Experiments in Parkinson¿s patients to characterize changes in postural stability and muscle activity due to dopaminergic medications during postural perturbations. - Calibrate and validate novel optical measurements of muscle metabolism against muscle stiffness and electromyographic signals. - Experiments in neurotypical humans subjects to characterize changes in postural stability and muscle activity with adaptation and age. - Computer simulations to characterize and understand contributions of muscle properties and sensorimotor feedback in normal and impaired postural stability. The successful applicant will be actively engaged in interdisciplinary learning and communication to synthesize and bridge diverse disciplines. Therefore, established competence in at least one the identified fields above, with a strong desire to gain expertise in another field is required. We seek motivated, independent, individuals with strong analytical and/or computer programming skills as well as strong relevant experience and coursework in neurophysiology or physiology research.-- Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, Muscle Mechanics, Kinesiology, Mechanical Engineering or related field. - Proven track record of successfully executing and publishing research projects in electrophysiology, muscle mechanics, sensorimotor-79311BR
