Menlo School Speech and Debate Coach in Atherton, California
Menlo School seeks a part-time Speech and Debate Club Coach to support our Middle and Upper School teams throughout the academic year and during competition season. The coach will meet with the teams twice a week for practice (90 minutes each practice) and spend additional time with the teams for tournaments. Tournaments are typically on the weekends at other host schools and occasionally hosted by Menlo.
Responsibilities Include:
Lead both the 90-minute Middle School Club session and the 90-minute Team Novice Practice each week.
Previous experience teaching middle school or high school-aged students preferred.
Familiarity with curriculum development is beneficial.
Serve as the main point of contact for parents of team members.
Responsible for registering debaters in tournaments throughout the year.
Coordinate with team leadership to ensure accurate and efficient tournament registration.
Collaborate with the other coach on tournament registration for debaters.
Engage in parent communication and logistics coordination.
Instruct weekly after-school practices.
Coordinate with the other coach in chaperoning students at both online and in-person tournaments.
Lead two weekly after-school practices at Menlo School: Middle School Club session and Team Novice session, focusing on developing skills in public advocacy, critical thinking, and research.
Foster a positive and productive classroom environment that encourages student participation and collaboration in related activities.
Act as the primary contact for parent communications regarding student participation, scheduling, and logistics.
Manage finalizing tournament registration entries for Menlo debaters.
Qualifications:
High school graduate
Former competitor in high school or college debate
Experience working with high school-aged students
Prior experience coaching is strongly desired
Excellent communication skills
Reliable, flexible, patient, and organized
Available to work occasional nights and weekends

Pay range:
In the spirit of pay transparency we share the base salary range for this position for the 2024-2025 academic year. Our Faculty have a wide range of experience. The full pay range, which encompasses all experience levels is $35.00 - $50.00 per hour. Within this broad range, we pay in accordance with what could be reasonably expected based on an individual's experience level. Base salary is exclusive of fringe benefits, retirement plan employer contributions or potential stipends (for eligible employees). Pay ranges at Menlo are reasonable estimates of what the School anticipates paying for a role but are not guaranteed. If hired at Menlo School, your final base salary will be determined by factors such as skills, education, experience, job level, part-time status and number of months of work per academic year. In addition to those factors, we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity with our current employees as a part of any final offer. Please keep in mind that the generous range mentioned above is the full base salary range for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range is not typical for Menlo School in order to allow for future and continued salary growth.
