Ohio University Assistant Director, Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Environment in Athens, Ohio

Job Description:

The Russ College of Engineering & Technology’s Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Environment ( ISEE ) at Ohio University invites applications for the grant-funded, full-time term, benefits eligible position of Assistant Director. The Assistant Director is responsible for oversight and completion of assigned ISEE R&D activities; duties include supporting existing materials research, communicating project results and status, ensuring compliance with safety requirements, training student researchers, and regularly interacting with industrial partners.

Responsibilities include:

1) Leads various research teams to develop new material formulations.

2) Supervises other staff members as they design, plan, and conduct experiments.

3) Assists in the implementation of the strategic vision for research and development in alignment with overall goals of ISEE and the University.

4) Identifies innovation, expansion, and collaboration opportunities to enhance ISEE’s impact.

5) Identifies funding opportunities and pursues grants or partnerships to support ongoing and future initiatives and to maintain the functionality of the research.

Primary Accountabilities include:

1) Materials R&D: Develops trainings on experimental methods and equipment. Determines mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties of materials utilizing defined testing procedures. Develops testing procedures to evaluate material properties.

2) External Communications: Identifies funding opportunities and pursues grants or partnerships to support ongoing and future initiatives and to maintain the functionality of the research. Engages with stakeholders, including industry partners and government agencies, to showcase the impact and potential applications of the research. Develops project progress reports. Supports development of research proposals, research presentations, and peer-reviewed journal manuscripts.

Additional Responsibilities (included but not limited to):

1) Manages the ISEE Design and Fabrication Facilities which include numerous machine tools, welders, etc.

2) Oversees the institute safety program including the development of safety protocols like Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and Safety Evaluation Reports (SER’S) to ensure the safe operation of in-house fabricated prototype test systems.

3) Assists with the management of the ISEE Analytical Facilities when required.

4)Hires, leads, trains, and develops students, staff, team leaders, project managers, and other technical talent on quality control and other techniques to provide consistent delivery of products and services

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field by start date

Minimum of 3 years of related work experience.

Minimum of 1 year of supervisory or managerial experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
