Machinist and Fabricator at Valvoline Global’s automotive Test Laboratory in Ashland, KY will primarily be responsible for machining and fabricating mechanical parts for test stand installations, safety guarding, facility equipment, new rigs and setups for the laboratory. This work would be performed using manually controlled machine tools and welding equipment as per drawings, samples, or sketches. Position is in a research and development environment where flexibility, creativity and attention to detail are desirable traits.
Valvoline Global’s automotive test laboratory in Ashland, KY conducts various engine tests as well as other automotive tests which are crucial to research & development, performance validation, and certification of Valvoline Global’s various automotive products, such as light-duty as well as heavy-duty engine oil lubricants, coolants, and other automotive fluids.
How You'll Make an Impact
Weld assemblies and join parts together for new fabrications and maintenance repairs using various methods such as GTAW (TIG) welding, GMAW (MIG) welding, SMAW (stick) welding, gas brazing and welding, etc. with safety and proficiency. Operate oxy-acetylene torches, plasma cutters, grinders, band saws, and other shop tools to prepare materials for welding and fabrication.
Operate manual machine tools including lathe, drill, milling machine, and surface grinder, etc. in a safe and proficient manner to produce parts to engineering specifications.
Identify and create machine setups and work holding methods needed to produce quality parts.
Perform layout work on raw materials using rulers, protractors, squares, scribes, etc. as required to make finished parts.
Specify and order raw materials required to complete projects. Order consumable items required for shop equipment, such as compressed gas cylinders, grinding wheels, welding supplies, machine shop tooling, etc.
Organize and clean working areas as required to maintain a safe, productive working environment.
Provide assistance to other technical & operating personnel; such as operators, instrumentation & electrician tech., engineers as and when required. Provide assistance in installations.
Perform basic maintenance and repair of machine tools and other equipment as needed.
Take periodic required safety trainings and courses.
Other duties and responsibilities as determined by Valvoline Global from time to time in its sole discretion.
What You'll Need
Associates degree in Machining and/or Welding Technology, Industrial Systems & Maintenance or equivalent
Familiarity with basic precision measuring tools including micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, bore gauges, etc. required to produce and verify parts.
Basic ability to operate computers (Microsoft Suite), computerized systems is required.
Experience or familiarity with Computer Aided Design (CAD) software would be a plus.
Understanding US std. and SI/metric units of length dimension as well as for other process parameters.
Good utility knowledge of various machine tools and mechanics tools
Have a good working understanding of US std. pipe dimensions, threads & thread sizes, various connection/ fittings (NPT, Straight, Hyd., EFI, JIC/AN, Swagelok, camlock, US vs metric etc.), hoses, tubing etc.
Capable of executing project assignments, in a team-based environment, with minimal supervision. Flexibility in work function.
Pro-active, self-motivated, self-learner, learning new technologies as they become available.
Strong mechanical aptitude.
Good analytical and problem-solving skills. Good comprehension and communication skills.
Organized, dutiful and safety conscious.
Must be able to stand, lift, bend, kneel, sit, climb stairs, and work in a machine shop or lab environment for extended periods of time. Should be able to work in noisy, hot, and humid indoor lab or outdoor environment. Ability to handle and/or lift minimum 50 lbs.
