COUNTY OF BUNCOMBE General Services Department Intern in Asheville, North Carolina

**Buncombe County General Services Department is hiring an intern. This intern will shadow employees in the major disciplines of HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical work; and will learn about Project Management of various County projects. There are approximately 25 individuals who work on this team, and the intern will have an opportunity to interact with many of them and learn about each discipline. This intern will report to the department's Business Administrator and will work out of 40 McCormick Place, Asheville, NC 28801.

The position will work 7:30AM to 4:30PM, and the intern will need to be able to reliably get to the work site for each scheduled shift. The department will discuss flexibility around scheduling needs during the interview and on boarding process. We are following an expected hiring timeline of late June to early July.

Purpose of the Internship**

The purpose of this position is to provide on-the-job training and experience. Engages in various work assignments, projects, and activities of varying complexity, structured to enable the individual to gain the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform at a professional level. Receives training and mentorship in planning and carrying out activities and assignments.

Essential Projects and Learning Objectives:

  • Provides entry- to intermediate-level services, under supervision of County staff, as appropriate to the day-to-day operating objectives of the department.

  • Undertakes and/or participates in projects and programs designed to develop professional skills and expertise appropriate to the needs of the organization.

  • Participates in the planning and implementation of unit projects and initiatives within area of expertise.

  • Interacts directly with colleagues and/or other internal or external constituencies in the planning of assignments and the resolution of day-to-day operational problems.

  • Receives guidance, training, and mentoring from professional personnel in planning and carrying out activities and assignments.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education or Experience Required:Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Construction, Air Conditioning/Heating Technology, Electrical Systems Technology, Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or Welding Technology.

Additional/Preferred Education, Training and/or Experience: Experience with hand tools, reading blueprints, repair and maintenance work, and/or auto maintenance preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of standard practices, materials and equipment related to the assigned field of work.

  • Skill in the use and care of various tools and equipment employed in the work.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

In order to uphold internal pay parity and equity, salaries are non-negotiable for new and current Buncombe County employees. All new employees are paid according to their years of relevant education and experience above minimum requirements for the position and employees have the opportunity to obtain pay increases via cost of living increases and promotions.
