Amazon Security Engineer, AWS Vulnerability Management in Arlington, Virginia

This position can be located in one of the following locations: Arlington VA or Herndon VA.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) Security is looking for a passionate, innovative, and motivated Security Engineer for the AWS Security Vulnerability Management team. As a Security Engineer with our team, you will dig in to our customers' most difficult requests, identify security risks, analyze and process big data, partner to build and improve tools that will improve our builders' experience with security.

In this role, you will be part of an agile team of security engineers solving complex security challenges that have direct and measurable impact on our customers. Our programs stretch across all of AWS, giving you the opportunity to interact with product teams, industry specialists, security partners, and organization leaders.

Our programs and services protect the AWS cloud for all customers and preserve our customers’ trust in us. You’ll get to use the full power and breadth of AWS technologies to build services that protect every single AWS customer, both internally and externally, from security threats – not many teams can say that!

Key job responsibilities

Who you are: You are a creative, collaborative person who likes to be close to the details. You like to get inside technology, understanding how things work, when to make subtle change, and when to disrupt the status quo to achieve the right results. You’re someone who prioritizes effectively and often.

  • Build and implement solutions to identify software based risks in AWS services with a focus on automation.

  • Perform vulnerability and impact assessments taking into account base, temporal, and environmental factors.

  • Query, analyze, and report on large datasets.

  • Work with a team of software and security engineers that design, build, and own software solutions that solve complex security challenges for AWS and our customers.

What you will do: You'll leverage your knowledge in multiple domains to investigate, understand, develop, and deliver elegant solutions to complex security questions. You'll bring your high standards, applying the right technologies while following security engineering best practices. You will be a security thought leader for our team and AWS Security, owning a set of long-term security outcomes. You're also someone who will be setting the bar high for your colleagues, serving as a mentor to your teammates.

A day in the life

Who we are: AWS Security is a proven leader of many security issues for a wide variety of platforms and technologies including cloud services, Internet of things (IoT), identity and access management, mobile devices, virtualization and custom hardware, all operating at massive scale.

  • Diving into large datasets to identify potential risks.

  • Perform severity assessments of software vulnerabilities.

  • Work with software builders to apply environmental context against findings to adjust risk scores.

  • Implement automation to improve operational throughput and efficiency.

  • Work with partner teams to propose and implement functionality to reduce risks at scale.

Basic Qualifications

  • BS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or related degree; or 4+ years equivalent technology experience

  • 3 years experience in system, network, and/or application security

  • 3 years experience in threat modeling and interpreting vulnerability disclosures

  • 2 years experience building automated tools in C, C++, Java, Python, Perl, PowerShell, or Ruby

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in vulnerability management.

  • Experience affecting change across complex environments.

  • Strong understanding of networking, operating system internals, and system design.

  • Experience with AWS services.
