Job Summary

Primarily providing computer Linux support for the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department to meet academic, research, and administrative needs for the department and organized research organizations within the department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Linux installation, configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting, for end-user network connected workstations, servers, laptops, virtual servers, peripherals.

  • Develop and maintain scripts and/or automation tools for installation, configuration, and maintenance of systems.

  • Administer academic and research computers, network-based devices, and other various equipment, including OS imaging, system patching, package deployments, incident resolution and change management . Manage Linux accounts, home/working directories, groups, permissions, quotas, and file shares.

  • Occasional systems administration support of MacOS and Windows systems.

  • Assist with evaluating procurement requests for hardware and software.

  • Write technical specifications, operational and end user documentation.

  • Perform disaster recovery planning and testing.

  • Backup for Manager of Operations and Services and the Software Systems Specialist.

  • Manage deployments, maintenance, licensing, and performance of engineering/scientific software applications on Linux servers and end-user computer systems.

  • Perform disk encryption to meet compliance policies and configuration guidelines.

  • Participate in special projects from start to completion.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant computer field with one (1) year of experience providing server, desktop, end-user, and related IT equipment support in a business, enterprise, or higher education environment or equivalent relevant experience.

  • Understanding of basic network infrastructure, troubleshooting, and utilization of diagnostic tools/utilities for monitoring the performance and integrity of the systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in systems administration, working in a highly mixed operating system environment with a combination and interworking of Windows, UNIX, Linux, Mac OS X, and others.

  • Professional critical thinking skills, with the ability to solve complex problems in multistage approaches.

  • Experience supporting faculty, staff, students, and researchers in higher education.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Familiarity with the three (3) main Linux distros – Debian (deb), red hat (rpm), and Slackware (slp). Experience maintaining Ubuntu, Red Hat Linux, CentOS, and some macOS and Windows devices.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Linux environments, services, configurations, package deployments, troubleshooting, implementing security best practices, system/user policies.

  • Ability to work as a team member, take initiative to work independently, and embrace learning recent technologies.

  • Excellent communication, organizational and people skills.

  • Ability to be self-directed, resourceful, and creative.

  • Ability to complete all physical tasks as needed.
