Actalent Automation Controls Engineer in Arlington, Texas

Job Title: Automation Controls EngineerJob Description

We are seeking an experienced Automation Controls Engineer to collaborate with strategic Account Managers, Project Managers, and Estimators to assess potential projects and submit proposals. The ideal candidate will interpret construction drawings and specifications for electrical systems, P&IDs, motor control, relay control, and PLC design to effectively communicate with customers and the design team, ensuring a thorough understanding of project objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with strategic Account Managers, Project Managers, and Estimators to assess potential projects and submit proposals.

  • Interpret construction drawings and specifications for electrical systems, P&IDs, motor control, relay control, and PLC design.

  • Understand electrical theories, principles, and writing specifications.

  • Understand basic relay logic and raise questions as needed to fully grasp design intent and best practices.

  • Develop PLC programs in Function Block, Structured Text, Ladder Logic, and other languages.

  • Create control strategies, I/O lists, Bills of Materials, and test plans for control panels and automated systems.

  • Oversee and perform Quality Assurance of completed control panels in the panel shop.

  • Conduct internal and customer-witnessed Factory Acceptance Tests.

  • Perform on-site commissioning of control panels.

  • Troubleshoot issues that may arise during startup.

  • Train customers on the use and operation of control systems and software.

  • Incorporate feedback from panel designers, manufacturers, electricians, and installers to modify drawing packages as needed.

  • Respond to service calls to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair control systems and programming.

  • Organize and manage scheduled work orders to meet on-time needs.

  • Communicate with vendors, engineers, owners, service managers, and other contractors to ensure project completion within scope and budget.

  • Mentor and train less experienced Automation Specialists.

  • Treat clients with the highest degree of respect and work to develop a partnership environment.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Travel to job sites may be required (approximately 25%).

Essential Skills

  • PLC programming experience

  • Controls engineering expertise

  • Knowledge of Modicon PLCs

  • Experience with data center building controls, distribution centers, and production & manufacturing facilities

  • Familiarity with fans, motors, dampers, lighting, and cooling systems

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience programming all facets of data center building controls

  • Strong problem-solving skills

  • Ability to train and mentor less experienced team members

  • Effective communication skills with various stakeholders

Work Environment

The work environment includes a combination of office settings and on-site locations. The role requires travel to job sites (approximately 25% of the time) and may involve working in various facility conditions. The position demands interaction with vendors, engineers, owners, service managers, and other contractors to ensure project completion within scope and budget.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $55.00
