Job Summary

The Accountant II, will provide high-level accounting services and financial analysis to the College of Liberal Arts, including financial management tools, trends analysis, budget planning, and other analyses. Collaborates with the College Business Officer, Business Operations Manager, Office Administrator, and other team members to make appropriate recommendations about financial activities in a manner that aligns with university and college policies. Supports monthly and year-end accounting-related activities, annual audits, processing grant-related activities, etc. Understands and applies best practices, fund accounting expertise, as well as sponsor project guidelines. Responsible for applying fundamental accounting practices and controls to a variety of financial transactions, analysis, and reporting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Financial Analysis and Reporting

  • Prepare, examine, audit, and analyze accounting records, financial statements, and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards.

  • Provide financial and accounting analysis and reports, as requested, under the general direction of the Business Operations Manager, College Business Officer, and the Associate Dean of Administrative Affairs. Synthesize , and prepare reports for management, representing current and projected financial status and providing explanations on large variances and discrepancies using research and analysis tools.

  • Prepare payroll analysis and Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) analysis. Provide expert account guidance and budgeting support to faculty, staff, and students in a proactive and service-minded approach. Pull MARS and UT Share reports using Excel and format in a user friendly manner for analysis and monitoring. Coordinates, compiles, and analyzes monthly expenditures reports for all areas of the departments while noting variances and apparent discrepancies and developing recommendations as appropriate. Produces integrated revenue/expense analyses, projections and utilizing spreadsheet and database applications.

Financial Reconciliation

  • Perform SAHARA statement reconciliation, and approval process.

  • Conduct ProCard reconciliation and log preparation.

  • Review and reconcile assigned cost center transactions verifying detail accuracy, permissibility, practicality, and allocation of transaction in corresponding to the larger purpose of the cost center.

Financial Transaction Initiation and Support

  • Process all budget transfers for the department. Involves ensuring all expense reports pass the budget-check process.

  • Advise faculty and administrative staff of location of available funds.

  • Maintain and update the department personnel spreadsheet that includes all positions with salaries and fringe.

  • Initiate budget transfers, cost center requests, approve change eForms including grant appointments, inter-department transfer entries, distribution of income and expense, and general error corrections as requested by the Manager of Business Services and/or College Business Officer.

  • Initiate research, route transaction and verify/troubleshoot for compliance with organization policies and procedures.

  • Act as backup for department Business Operations Manager financial approver in UT Share and Concur.

  • Manage COLA department’s endowments and send reports to chairs and administrative staff.

Budget Support

  • Assist in annual budget preparation by inputting into EPM and year-end audits, ensuring accuracy of accounting data. Making recommendations based on findings.

  • Review and address all cost center and project budgetary deficits; coordinate with Chairs to double-check budgets to prevent deficits.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree In Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related degree with three (3+) Plus years of increasing responsibilities including record keeping, accounting, Administrative, Secretarial, and Clerical; or seven (7) years of an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters of Business Administration Degree with six (6) years experience in higher education.

  • Experience working with PeopleSoft and UT Share.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Advanced skill in Excel, Word, Outlook. Ability to manage multiple projects.

  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.

  • Working knowledge of computerized accounting systems.
