The individual hired will monitor all aspects of the pre-award process for grants and contracts to ensure compliance and timely submissions for Principal Investigators. The pre-award grants administrator will interpret regulations and guidelines of program funding for moderately complex grants and contracts and prepare renewals and periodic reports for grant agencies.

Responsibilities*

Pre-Award Grant Administration: Provide comprehensive management of preparation/submission of grant proposals. Pre-Award activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Support faculty, fellows, and students with submitting grant applications to federal, non-federal, industry, and internal UM sponsors.

  • Advise the PI on how to achieve an effective, quality proposal and coordinate a timely submission process, ensuring appropriate approvals.

  • Interpret program announcement or other sponsor documents to ensure compliance with sponsor guidelines and deadlines.

  • Manage the grant submission process, from initial start to final submission, and ensuring all sponsor and university guidelines and deadlines are met.

  • Assist faculty to develop complex budgets and budget justifications following Sponsor, School, and University Policies.

  • Initiate and support the internal routing process through eResearch to route the Proposal Approval Form (PAF) and proposals through institutional review.

  • Comply and advice regarding University and School research policies including project budget development, accounting principles, sponsor regulations, sponsor selection, and contract terms and conditions.

  • Write and provide support on administrative sections of grants as needed.

Department Research Responsibilities:

  • Assist with data requests from department leadership including sponsored effort queries, funding queries, division data and other data requests.

  • Provide back-up for other members of the Research Administration Pre-Award team, which may include activities like Other Support and routing PAFs.

  • Participate in training opportunities to maintain a high level of knowledge, skill, and experience.

  • Perform other duties and provide ad hoc reporting as requested

Required Qualifications*

Research Administrator Senior: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience 5+ in research administration.

Research Administrator Intermediate Underfill: Bachelor's degree and 3 - 5 years of grant and contract experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

To be considered for this position, all applicants must:

  • Have strong computer skills and experience working with Microsoft Office and Adobe Professional.

  • Have excellent organizational skills including the ability to set priorities and manage competing deadlines in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.

  • Have exceptional written and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Have a positive attitude and commitment to providing excellent customer service.

  • Requires strong computer skills including proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Power Point and Adobe.

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively.

  • Understand accounting rules and Uniform Guidance principles.

  • Knowledge of sponsored research policies, rules, and regulations.

Desired Qualifications*

  • 5+ yrs. experience in finance and research administration.

  • Certified Research Administrator (CRA)

  • Knowledge of policies and procedures, specifically related to sponsored projects and financial systems; familiarity with ORSP, eResearch, Business Objects, and Wolverine Access reporting tools including HR and Financial tools, faculty appointments and subcontracts.

  • Experience preparing federal proposals, contracts, or foundation grants.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
