Department Summary

In support of the mission of Student Life, the Dean of Students Office promotes student development and enhances the Michigan experience through programs, services, partnerships/connections, and policy development that promote an inclusive campus climate and facilitate the successful navigation of campus life. The core work of the Dean of Students Office includes promoting a safe, respectful, healthy, and inclusive campus community, providing support services, managing critical incidents impacting students and the campus community, and recognizing and responding to emerging needs within the student population.

Job Summary

The Campus Climate Support Coordinator reports to the Associate Dean of Students and coordinates the Campus Climate Support program, including the Expect Respect outreach campaign delivery and proactive and responsive student support. Additionally, this position contributes to the functions of the Dean of Students Office through the support of its administrative, student support, programmatic, and crisis management functions. The Campus Climate Support Coordinator sustains and expands upon current Student Life Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives and engages in effective practices intended to support students experiencing challenges associated with campus climate.

Responsibilities*

Campus Climate Support Efforts (30%)

A campus climate concern (formerly called Bias Concern) can include actions that discriminate, stereotype, exclude, harass, or harm anyone in the U-M community based on their identity (such as race, color, ethnicity, national origin, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, age, or religion). Campus Climate Support efforts ensure a coordinated and comprehensive response to concerns related to discrimination and harassment that are affecting students. This position is responsible for directly providing or coordinating responses to reported concerns utilizing the established protocols, engaging the multidisciplinary AdHoc Team, and implementing proactive and reactive educational efforts within the campus community regarding the impact of harm. Response efforts also ensure that the appropriate University office and process address faculty and staff concerns.

  • Develops and implements an annual program of outreach and training opportunities for student organizations, communities, and campus partners to raise awareness of Campus Climate Support.

  • As part of the Dean of Students Office, receives and triages reports of climate concerns and reviews them with designated campus and community partners for support and response.

  • Operationalizes and supports an ad hoc team of unit leaders to have a broad view across campus of the climate and major/community incidents by providing data and statistics and being a central point of contact for all incidents and reports.

  • Analyzes and reviews case data to identify trends, concerns, and hotspots and elevates issues to appropriate campus units for potential programmatic improvements.

  • Assists with providing appropriate and effective coordination and communication between multiple campus offices, including staff members in the academic units, DEI leads involved in the response to campus climate incidents impacting students on and off campus, and others providing support to individuals and groups targeted.

  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with various campus partners to successfully navigate complex climate issues, advise students, and act as a liaison when needed. This may include units such as Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA), the Trotter Multicultural Center, the Office for Institutional Equity, the Office of Student Conflict Resolution, the Office of the General Counsel, the University of Michigan Police Department, University Housing, Residence Education, Housing Security, and other units for incident response management, advocacy, and processes.

  • Support students impacted or targeted by campus climate incidents with navigating impacts and effects by meeting with them to discuss options and collaboratively create potential next steps.

  • Serves as a process advocate by assisting students in understanding and appropriately navigating formal and informal incident response processes.

  • Refers students impacted by campus climate incidents to potentially beneficial campus services and programs.

  • Represents Campus Climate Support by attending various meetings, including the campus DEI committees and work groups within Student Life and other relevant teams and meetings.

  • Provides summative information on support efforts for particular incidents through reports and presentations.

  • Responds to requests for information about Campus Climate Support.

Manage Expect Respect Campaign Initiatives (30%)

  • Implements annual initiatives to promote the campus Expect Respect campaign and maintains the program website.

  • Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises student Expect Respect program assistant temp(s)).

  • Partners with other units to support campus and divisional social justice educational initiatives.

  • Assists in enacting cultural appropriation prevention initiatives.

  • Collaborates with schools/colleges to ensure consistent messaging about the Expect Respect campaign.

  • Collaborates with the Office of New Student Programs to ensure annual Expect Respect messaging begins in orientation programs.

  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with identity-based student organizations.

  • Creates and distributes marketing materials annually to schools/colleges, Michigan Medicine, Athletics, and other campus partners.

  • Creates website content as needed to address current campus questions/issues, as well as identify appropriate content from other subject matter experts (i.e., MESA, Trotter, Spectrum, SAPAC)

Critical Incident Case Management (25%)

  • Provides direct service to students who are experiencing personal/social difficulties, physical/mental health-related concerns, financial hardship/distress, basic needs insecurities, and academic, behavioral, or other challenges who would benefit from intervention and referrals to on and off-campus resources and to ensure they receive developmentally appropriate interventions and support

  • Assesses individual student needs and assists students in identifying, locating, organizing, and accessing necessary services and resources

  • Coordinates intervention and communication between multiple university offices, academic units, health care providers, and community resources

  • Guides and supports students, parents, faculty, and staff as needed in navigating university policies, procedures, and resources.

  • Provides a safe listening space to offer students compassion, support, and guidance.

  • Teaches and coaches students to develop and demonstrate problem-solving and self-advocacy skills.

  • Assists students in locating and obtaining emergency funding.

  • Facilitates notification to academic units of critical incidents on behalf of students as necessary.

  • Serves on-call for critical incident response and student support in the office during the business day as part of a rotating schedule

  • Provides rotating after-hours (evening and weekend) on-call support for the Dean of Students Office.

Impact Training Responsibilities (10%)

  • Provides logistical and administrative coordination for Impact Training sessions.

  • Participates in the curriculum and content development, planning and implementation, and assessment efforts.

  • Serves as a member of the Impact Training presentation team.

  • Coordinates training for and assignments of volunteer staff presenters.

  • Identifies future training needs and creates an action plan to develop new materials.

General Administrative Responsibilities (5%)

  • Contributes to the daily functioning of the Dean of Students Office through support of its administrative, on-call, and crisis management responsibilities.

  • Prepares or coordinates the preparation of special and periodic reports.

  • Assures compliance with reporting requirements.

  • Represents the Dean of Students Office to other university departments and the campus community through participation on relevant committees and in various training and presentation opportunities.

  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of the Dean of Students Office.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration, Social Work, Counseling, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum 1-3 years of progressively responsible graduate or professional experience in student affairs administration within a higher education setting.

  • Experience working with a dynamic, diverse, and engaged student population, individually and in groups; experience working with individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and life experiences.

  • Experience managing complex situations involving students, parents, staff, faculty, and community members.

  • Experience managing multiple and competing priorities.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience with diversity and inclusion education, programs, or services.

  • Strong working knowledge of identity and student development theories and their applications.

  • Experience implementing student affairs programs, including proactive and responsive campus climate initiatives.

  • Demonstrated computer proficiency (word processing, spreadsheet, and database systems).

Working conditions

Work unpredictable early morning, evening, and weekend hours in response to the emergent needs of students and the campus community.

Physical requirements

This position requires the ability to travel to various campus locations. The person in this position may need to move/transport items weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds, etc.

The person in this position routinely moves through the facility to attend meetings/events and access files or information.

  • Expect Respect student temp program assistants (up to two)

Selected candidates whose start date is after 4/1/2024 or before 8/31/2024 will not be eligible for the university FY 24-25 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.

Authorization to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment and applicants for this position will not be sponsored for work visas.
