Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.
These positions are represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) and are subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the AMEA.

Example of Duties
Under the direction of the Long-Range Planning Manager, performs mid-level professional planning services. As a member of the Long-Range Planning Division, this position will assist in the development and implementation of the comprehensive plan for the Municipality and its elements; environmental planning; municipal site selection studies; district and neighborhood planning; zoning code amendments; reviews and comments on proposed rezones, conditional uses, subdivisions, and site plans; and other studies and technical reports. Duties of this position include research and analyses of short and long-range planning issues, review of
public and private development projects for consistency with adopted plans, preparation of technical reports and plans, conducting presentations to the general public and municipal boards and commissions, grant administration, and project management. Perform public involvement duties including updating municipal websites, social media accounts, and publications. Coordinates efforts between other local, state, and federal agencies, the development community, and the public. Functions as lead planner on assigned projects. Answers inquiries on all aspects of AMC Title 21, Land Use Planning Code. Perform other duties as assigned. The Long-Range Planning Division staffs three advisory boards: Historic Preservation Commission, Watershed and Natural Resources Advisory Commission, and Geotechnical Advisory Commission. This position will also provide staff support to other municipal boards and commissions as needed. This position does require attendance at some night meetings.
Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent and six (6) years of urban planning experience with the Municipality or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
Associate’s Degree in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Statistics, or a related discipline and four (4) years of urban planning experience with the Municipality or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Statistics, or a related discipline and two (2) years of urban planning experience with the Municipality or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
Master’s Degree in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Statistics, or a related discipline and urban planning experience with the Municipality or the equivalent elsewhere.
- Valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
Preferences:
AICP or GISP Certification

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.
Military Service Interview Preference:
Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
