Overview
ASSISTANT PORT CAPTAIN:
UIC, Bowhead Transport seeks a year round, (Anchorage AK Based) Assistant Port Captain to provide assistance to support the Bowhead Transport Port Captain, managing vessels operating in the waters of Washington, Canada and Alaska. Assistant Port Captain will be responsible for maintaining a safe work environment on all Bowhead Transport vessels and will provide a variety of timely services as directed by the Bowhead Port Captain.

Responsibilities
Assistant Port Captain Essential Functions Include: (As Directed by the Bowhead Port Captain)
Ensuring the safety of all Bowhead crew and passengers including safety training, all vessels safety equipment monitoring and supply.
Scheduling, planning and overseeing haul outs, shipyard work and off season / In Season repairs and maintenance on all Bowhead Transport vessels coordinating with all vessel crews and Bowhead Transport management.
Coordinating the purchase of equipment or operational supplies as needed for all vessels: Coordinating the purchase of supplies may involve Bowhead Transport captains, engineers, deckhands and Bowhead Management staff as needed.
Expeditor services requiring driving and flying parts and supplies as requested by the Bowhead Port Captain.
Advertising vessel crew positions.
Onboarding of all vessel crew utilizing UIC, HR department assistance.
Assisting the Port Captain in managing Bowhead Transport vessel crews including but not limited to email correspondence, telephone correspondence and in person communication.
Tracking and managing all Bowhead Transport crew turnovers.
Reserving hotels, flights and auto transportation for all Bowhead crew members when crew are traveling to or from work.
Port Notification: Arranging all services in each port prior to Bowhead Transport vessels arrival and departure. Scheduling moorage and services can include but is not limited to: Vessel Moorage, Fueling, Provisioning, Transportation, Assistance Equipment Rental, Laydown Yard Space, Assistance from other company personnel, etc. All port arrangements, contact names and telephone numbers will be provided to each Bowhead Transport vessel in advance of arrival.
Occasional temporary, (stand in) for Bowhead Transport vessel crew members in the event of an emergency or open position requiring a licensed crew member. (If Assistant Port Captain holds a USCG license)
Travel as needed: Assistant Port Captain will be required to travel at times depending on the circumstances involved.
Field Work: Assistant Port Captain at times will be required to assist Bowhead vessel crews or land based Bowhead staff loading, lashing, consolidating and manifesting, cargo as needed in any / all port locations when occasional additional assistance is required
Maintaining of Bowhead Transport Equipment: Assistant Port Captain will be involved in maintaining all Bowhead equipment land based or at sea. Maintaining equipment may include but is not limited to ensuring all Bowhead equipment is winterized, worn or broken parts are repaired / replaced, appropriate storage is secured when needed and equipment is in safe operational condition at all times.
Other duties as assigned by the Bowhead Port Captain or other Bowhead Management staff.
Qualifications
Licenses, Credentials, Requirements and Experience:
Valid Drivers License
(Preferred) Current USCG Captains License, Current USCG deck license, AB or OS. (Additional Training, and licenses may be considered after acceptance for employment by Bowhead Transport depending on applicant qualifications)
Local resident of Anchorage Alaska or surrounding area preferred.
General PC knowledge required including; spreadsheet software, word processing software and knowledge of MS Office Suite.
Strong interpersonal skills, positive (Anything is Possible) attitude, problem solving ability and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.
Individual should be stable under pressure and have the ability to withstand the stresses associated with the job's mental demands, physical demands, potentially hazardous situations and unpredictable weather
Individual will be required to work a flexible schedule often times requiring hours outside of normal office hours, (8-5) as needed and will likely exceed 40 hours per week occasionally during the primary operating season, (April – October)
Physical Demands: The work environment varies and includes, but is not limited to: dock, port, bay, beaches, waterways, office space, equipment rooms, warehouse space, construction zones, and outdoor environments. Work hours may fluctuate outside of normal duty hours. While performing the duties of this job, the individual is:
Regularly required to sit for prolonged periods at a desk or workspace utilizing computer phones and office supplies.
Required to sit for prolonged periods during travel by plane or auto
Frequently required to stand and/or walk and routinely required to reach with hands and arms.
Routinely required to stand, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or squat.
Frequently lifts and /or moves up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 75 pounds.
Occasionally lifts and/or moves 75-100 pounds with the assistance of deckhands and/or heavy lifting equipment.
Drug and Alcohol Testing Programs
All employees must pass Non-DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all UIC Non-DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program guidelines and requirements.
If working on a DOT project, employees must pass a DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program requirements.
