Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Graphic Design, in the College of Design at Iowa State University (ISU), invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor. The anticipated start date for this position is August 16, 2025.

The department is seeking a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor to join our 19-person graphic design faculty and assist in advancing the department’s future goals.

Successful candidates will be expected to establish, sustain and grow a world-class externally funded research program that complements or aligns with the department’s areas through independent and collaborative efforts. Additionally, the candidate is expected to establish a record of scholarship at the highest levels, contribute to the teaching missions at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and engage in institutional service and service to the profession. Candidates should have strong communication skills, share our commitment to enhancing excellence and exhibit the potential for long-term leadership in supporting the mission of the department, college, and university.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • MFA or equivalent terminal degree in graphic design or a related field.

OR

  • BFA and a Master’s degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstration of effective teaching that contributes to the department’s undergraduate and graduate degrees in Graphic Design plus the upcoming undergraduate majors in Game Design, Illustration, or User Experience Design.

  • Demonstration of fundamental graphic design skills, experiences, and knowledge.

  • Successful record of, or showing promise for future success in, academic research or creative scholarship related to the discipline of graphic design.

  • Record of active engagement in interdisciplinary collaborations.

About the Graphic Design Department

The Department of Graphic Design is part of ISU’s College of Design, along with Departments of Architecture, Art and Visual Cultures, Community and Regional Planning, Industrial Design, Interior Design, and Landscape Architecture. The Department offers a NASAD-accredited BFA in Graphic Design, an MA in Experiential Graphic Design, and an MFA in Graphic Design. The department enrolls nearly 300 undergraduate and over 25 graduate students, all of whom engage in both traditional and emerging technologies and are prepared to become leaders in the field of visual communication.
