Job Summary & General Information

The City of Alpharetta is accepting applications for the seasonal position of Camp Counselor.

Applications will be selected to serve as the Camp Counselor for a specific camp:

Wills Park Summer Day Camp, children ages 6-10

Wills Park Summer Day Camp: Extreme, children ages 11-12

Teen Adventure Camp, children ages 13-15

Camp Counselors will report to the Camp Director of their assigned camp, Camp Manager, Program Coordinator, and Supervisor at the Alpharetta Community Center. A Camp Counselor would need to be available to work from May 28th – August 2nd.

Under the general supervision of the Camp Director, Camp Manager, Program Coordinator, and Supervisor. Camp Counselor will assist with the planning, organization, supervision, and implementation of a daily activity schedule for camp participants.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities

The Camp Counselor will be responsible for:

  • Acting as a positive role model/mentor to participants

  • Developing and leading daily activities with campers ranging from indoor and outdoor games, sports, fitness activities, swimming, arts, and crafts that relate to the theme of the week

  • Eating lunch and snacks with campers

  • Providing positive and thorough interaction between parents and staff

  • Communicating regularly with other Camp Counselors, Camp Director, Camp Manager, Program Coordinator, and Recreation staff to ensure camp runs smoothly and efficiently

  • Overseeing the enforcement of camp rules at all times

  • Responsible for campers on field trips, at the City pool, and at various locations

  • Completing accurate accidents, behavior, and/or discipline reports

  • Rendering first aid in cases of minor injuries

  • Assisting with light-duty cleaning, and the setup and breakdown of tables and chairs

  • Participates at in-service training as required; participates in weekly staff meetings

  • Organizes and maintains all equipment and supplies

  • Perform regular visual inspections of camp equipment and notify the supervisor of defective equipment

  • Performing miscellaneous tasks as directed

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicant must be 16 years of age or older (by the start date of orientation, May 28th).

  • Applicant must have the ability to work as a team member and coordinate with other staff in contributing to the goals of the program.

  • Applicant must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Applicant must have exceptional communication skills.

  • Applicant must be able to interpret policies and procedures.

  • Applicant must be able to perform the essential functions of this role, with or without accommodation.

  • Applicant must be comfortable in or around water such as water games, pool, and water inflatables.

  • Applicant must provide their own transportation.

  • Applicant must be able to work a flexible daytime schedule, Monday through Friday, from May 28th through August 2nd.

  • Applicant must be able to attend mandatory Camp Staff orientation/training sessions scheduled on Tuesday, May 28th –May 31st.

  • Regular and consistent attendance is required.

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Applicant must clear a criminal background check.

  • Applicant must pass a mandatory drug test.

  • Hired applicants must possess a valid certificate of course completion for First Aid training that includes Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Children and Infants, first aid, and AED. This training must be from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. The City of Alpharetta will offer a CPR course during the week of camp training for all those who need this certification.

  • Hired applicants must provide official verification as to identity and work authorization.
