Patent and Trademark Office Supervisory Petitions Examiner in Alexandria, Virginia

Responsibilities The physical worksite for this position is located in Alexandria, Virginia. This position is telework eligible per agency and business unit discretion/policy. This role is the ideal next career step for you if: -You're interested in reviewing current laws, regulations and policies to determine whether changes should be recommended and is responsible for overseeing the implementation of such changes. -You enjoy evaluating and/or overseeing the evaluation of petitions and prepares decisions. Exercises signatory authority or prepares decisions for the signature by the Director of Petitions and/or the Deputy Commissioner for Patent Examination Policy. -You're interested in coordinating petition evaluation programs that focuses on new or modified legislation to determine the impact on agency programs. -You are well versed in assigning work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of the assignments, and the capabilities of the employee. -You're a problem solver who can represents the Office of Petitions in meetings with high-level officials from the Department of Commerce, other agencies, vendors and members of other external organizations, including presenting results of assessments and studies that may be complex or controversial, negotiating agreements, and influencing approval and implementation of agency-wide solutions and plans. -You want to play a key role in evaluating and/or overseeing the evaluation of petitions and prepares decisions. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications You must meet the United States Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) qualification requirements (including specialized experience and/or educational requirements) for the advertised position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the federal service. For this position, the next lower grade level is a GS-14. Specialized experience for this position includes: Experience in advanced legal patent examination processes sufficient to apply expert and diversified engineering, scientific and legal processes, concepts, theories, and practices in petition evaluation. Experience in supervising a diverse workforce. Selective Placement Factors: Candidates must possess the following for consideration: 1. Applicant must have full signatory authority. 2. Applicant must have passed the Certification Examination, the most recent Recertification, Manager Candidate Exam or the Agent's Examination. Supervisory Probationary Period- If selected, you may be required to complete an initial one-year supervisory probationary period.
