About Our Team:

The Environmental Systems Biology Department, located in Albuquerque, NM, is a diverse research group with a focus on both basic and applied biological and materials science research. We seek to address challenges related to national security, including biodefense and health security, and climate and energy security. Our department is part of a highly multidisciplinary center, comprised of researchers with expertise across the fields of biology (molecular biology, microbiology, virology, immunology, and biochemistry), chemistry (analytical, organic, and physical), computational science (bioinformatics, machine learning, and computational chemistry), and engineering (chemical, mechanical, and biomedical).

What Your Job Will Be Like:

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Maintain algal and/or bacterial and/or phage cultures on plates and in liquid medium.

  • Maintain mammalian and other eukaryotic cell cultures.

  • Isolate and quantify DNA or RNA and perform PCR.

  • Clone DNA into vectors.

  • Evaluate effects of various treatments on cell survival, growth, and other characteristics.

  • Analyze results to inform new experiments and analyses.

  • Perform microscopy.

  • Work on a wide range of research projects.

  • Learn experimental protocols to carry out laboratory work safely.

  • Follow procedures to make buffers and reagents as required for experimental needs.

  • Assist in experiment execution to meet project milestones.

  • Catalog your research in an electronic lab notebook and present your work in lab meetings.

  • Aid in the maintenance of the laboratory and daily lab operations.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Previous experience working in a biological laboratory.

  • Experience with aseptic technique and microbiology.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L security clearance.

  • Must be US citizen.

  • Successful drug screening.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Eagerness to learn new skills in biochemistry and molecular biology,

  • Strong written and communication skills, as demonstrated by publications, presentations, and confirmed by professional and/or academic references.
