Sandia National Laboratories Information Systems Architect (Experienced) in Albuquerque, New Mexico

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Sandia’s Threat Intelligence Community maintains research and development computer networks in support of the cybersecurity mission across the Laboratory. We are looking for an experienced Information Systems Architect to maintain and support the continuing evolution of these networks. You will be working with a diverse team of 5-6 other sysadmins, hardware engineers, and business support personnel.

The core infrastructure is Linux-centric and the networks are fully standalone (physically disconnected from the Internet). These networks are connected to many different buildings across both the Albuquerque and California campuses. The standalone nature requires that we replicate many of the valuable resources found on the Internet to provide a rich R&D environment. e.g. Wikipedia, Stack Exchange, and various OS/software/information repositories. We also maintain services and tools (GitLab/Mattermost, email, Ghidra, wiki, chat, etc) that our support cyber researchers.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Research, prototype, and architect solutions to problems that span multiple domains such as information assurance, hardware, software development, systems programming, data management, database development, system security, networking, and virtualization.
  • Continually monitor and evaluate new developments in industry best practices; selecting those most beneficial to Sandia for integration.
  • Advance solution space by resolving complex, difficult, or unique information system issues using creative and effective leading-edge solutions.
  • Evaluate and analyze the functionality and performance of information system solutions, ensuring that system requirements are met and security controls are implemented.
  • Think strategically when developing solutions to ensure long-term objectives are met while positioning Sandia to pursue future mission work.
  • Provide architectural direction for information systems and resolve issues that require architectural changes.
  • Team with an embedded ISSO to implement risk-based, NIST security controls.
  • Identify risks and risk-reduction strategies as part of balancing performance, cost, and schedule.
  • Interface with customers – internal or external to Sandia – to elicit and define information system requirements.
  • Be accountable to internal or external customers for overall technical performance of information systems.
  • Report on progress and advances to peers and stakeholders.
  • Participate in cross-system collaboration to define interfaces between systems.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Management Information Systems or relevant discipline plus five or more years of experience, or equivalent: experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to perform the duties of the job
  • 5 years or more experience managing a network infrastructure
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q and SCI level security clearance; SCI clearance typically requires a polygraph

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • Project Management experience for large Information Technology projects
  • Experience with Information Assurance in classified environments
  • Experience administering virtual environments to include VMware vSphere and Libvirt/KVM
  • Experience administering the following Linux Operating Systems. i.e. Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), CentOS, Ubuntu, and OpenSuSE
  • Experience developing scripts with Python3 and Bash
  • Experience with automated Linux configuration tools such as Ansible
  • Experience with enterprise level Linux patch management systems in a large heterogeneous environment
  • Experience administering SAN (Storage Area Networks) using the iSCSI protocol
  • Experience administering NAS (Network Attached Storage) systems i.e. NFS and CIFS
  • Experience managing Arista and Cisco network switches
  • Experience managing Firewalls especially iptables and firewalld
  • Experience maintaining basic network services. i.e. LDAP, DNS, DHCP, NTP, and IMAP

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
