  • Enable New York’s communities and residents to benefit equitably from energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Job Overview

NYSERDA’s IT Department seeks a qualified Data Governance Fellow to join the highly nimble Data Solutions team. Fellowship will have a 2-year term. This individual works across the Authority to lead the development of policies, processes, and roles for a strong data governance foundation. This position ensures that the different clean energy programs run by NYSERDA maintain a high level of data hygiene to meet compliance requirements and maintain public trust. The Data Governance Fellow plays a critical role in driving development and implementation of both internal-facing and external-facing Data Governance and Open Data initiatives. This position reports to the Manager of Data Solutions.

The ideal candidate needs to be comfortable working in a fast paced and constantly changing environment. They will need to enjoy interacting with and seeking feedback from stakeholders, have a high attention to detail, and an internal drive to set and achieve personal and team goals.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Coordinate Data Governance Core Council briefings, Data Governance Council meetings, and Data Governance Liaison meetings on a quarterly basis. Communicate agendas and meeting materials in advance and follow up with action items and meeting summaries

  • Participate in discussions with Senior Management on policy development to comply with NYS Information Technology Services (ITS) security policies to secure sensitive data. Partner collaboratively with all levels of the Authority to provide highly sought out subject matter expertise on Data Governance. Effectively communicate updates NYSERDA-wide through training, Knowledge Base articles, newsletters, and relevant stakeholder groups

  • Manage NYSERDA’s Open Data assets and strategy. Ensure existing datasets are refreshed, and collaborate with Program and other NYSERDA staff to determine open data needs and develop timely solutions

  • Oversee the Information Asset Worksheet classification process with Data Stewards, Information Owners, Program Counsel, Access Officer, and the Information Security Officer to determine the best platforms to share, collect and store information with NYSERDA staff and external stakeholders

  • Collaborate with software developers and Information Security to provide secure solutions for transferring data between NYSERDA and external stakeholders in an expeditious manner

  • Champion and support IT product launches and contribute to NYSERDA’s Tech Panel (user-based IT advisory group) by managing action items and posting meeting minutes

  • Interface with NYS government users that are both from within NYSERDA and also from other Agencies, Authorities, and the Governor’s Office

  • Provide data governance and open data support to end users (external clients and/or colleagues) through training, demonstrations, and documentation.

  • Participate in the evaluation of new and re-certification of existing third-party vendor applications for NYS security compliance

  • Oversee and promote Cyber Security Awareness and Data Privacy in conjunction with NYSERDA’s Information Security Officer

  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; participating in professional societies

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Data Management, or a related field and 1 year of professional experience

  • Experience in project management and documenting requirements

  • A demonstrated record in managing multiple diverse and complex activities simultaneously, delivering on commitments, and operating with speed, accuracy, and strong judgment

  • An ability to drive big picture goals while maintaining a strong attention to detail

  • Excellent presentation and interpersonal skills that resonate with audiences of different backgrounds; the ability to communicate persuasively, concisely, and unambiguously in speech and in writing

  • Consistently maintain composure and professionalism

  • Experience classifying information assets

  • Familiarity with Cyber Security

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s or PhD degree is highly valued

  • NYSERDA internship experience
