FUNCTION & SCOPE:

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Benefits Programs, the Sr. Benefits and Retirement Specialist assists in general benefits administration with a focus on retirement benefits, including retiree health insurance for approximately 2,500 retirees across the enterprise. The Sr. Benefits and Retirement Specialist provides outstanding customer service to campus administrators located on SUNY campuses across the state, interacts with campus and central office administrators, benefit and retirement providers, employees, and retirees.

DUTIES:

  • Administers the retiree health insurance process, including verification of eligibility, continuation of benefits, advise and educate retirees regarding their benefits.

  • Conducts retiree health training for campus HR contacts.

  • Assists with benefits communications, including retiree communications, letters, emails, website materials, and benefits handbooks.

  • Analyzes benefit reports and files for accuracy of records, troubleshoot issues, and recommends solutions to the Benefits Administrator and Assistant Director of Benefits Programs to improve processes.

  • Interacts with benefit and retirement vendors on day-to-day administration of all plans, including claims and eligibility resolution.

  • Applies Research Foundation benefit policy and procedures, plan documents, contracts, government regulations (i.e., HIPAA, COBRA, FMLA, ACA, etc.) when corresponding and assisting campus benefits administrators, and benefit providers.

  • Assists in the benefits enrollment process, maintenance of the HRIS benefits module for all benefit plans including continuation of benefits at termination and retirement.

  • Assists in the implementation of new benefit plans and/or changes.

  • Assists in the development and maintenance of internal controls, administrative procedures and desktop manuals for the function.

  • Assists in identifying and resolving system issues in conjunction with the Benefits Administrator and Assistant Director of Benefits Programs.

  • Provide outstanding customer service to campus administrators, employees, and retirees via phone or email.

  • Assists on audits to ensure retirement contributions and records are accurate.

  • Assists in retirement plan administration, including eligibility and contribution management

  • Other duties as assigned.

    Job Requirements:

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

  • Associate's degree preferred in appropriate field plus 3-5 years benefits and retirement administration experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience with an HRIS system required, working knowledge of Oracle Advanced Benefits preferred.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to establish good customer service relationships.

  • Excellent analytical and mathematical skills required.

  • Excellent MS Excel / Word skills required.

  • Must possess a skill set that lends itself to meeting high standards and expectations through extensive follow-up and follow through.

  • Successful experience in a collaborative team dynamic.

Compensation for this position: The compensation for this role is between $52,000 to $55,000. The pay will depend on a variety of factors that may include but are not limited to experience, education, training, and certifications.
