The Department of Information Sciences and Technology (IST), College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity (CEHC) at the University at Albany is seeking applicants for a faculty position in the growing field of Data Analytics. Candidates should be able to take an integrative approach in working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds within and outside the college. The Informatics Program invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor Rank in Informatics with a specialization in Data Analytics. The ideal candidate will contribute to our robust and dynamic Data Analytics curriculum, integrating cutting-edge research and practical applications into their teaching. This role is pivotal in fostering the next generation of data scientists.

CEHC has a goal of creating a dedicated team of educators and researchers capable of enabling our students to successfully explore and interpret the rich array of disciplines and perspectives contained within Informatics. The IST department within CEHC is committed to increasing diversity in the related fields that have traditionally been underrepresented by minority and women's participation. The successful candidate will join a department with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence and will be expected to contribute actively to these efforts. The Assistant or Associate Professor will play an integral part in developing and offering classes that foster a sense of welcoming to traditional, diverse, and non-traditional students. There are opportunities for collaboration across departments, particularly through our interdisciplinary Information Science doctoral program. Partner departments include Business, Art & Art History, Computer Science, Engineering, Public Health, Public Administration, and Communication.

At the graduate level, we offer a Master of Science in Information Science (M.S.I.S.) and a Master of Science in Information Science, School Library (M.S.I.S.S.L.), accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). The College also offers a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Information Science, and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Library and Information Science. A combined B.A./M.S.I.S. or B.S./M.S.I.S. permits highly qualified students to begin work on the master's degree while still an undergraduate. The Department of Information Sciences and Technology offers programs that specifically explore the creation, dissemination, presentation, and use of data.

Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Information Sciences and Technology (IST), the successful candidate is an integral part of the Department's instructional team. Assistant and Associate Professors deliver undergraduate and graduate-level instruction, conduct research, and partake in advisement responsibilities. Each semester, the tenure-track and tenured faculty generally teach two courses. While we welcome candidates from a range of specializations and methodologies, we especially encourage candidates whose scholarly work critically engages with diverse ways of understanding issues in technology and society. This could include scholarship in topics such as, theoretical or applied data analytics; algorithm development and solving concrete problems for science, industry, and society within various application areas, such as health, bioinformatics, library science, information retrieval and web data mining; fairness and data ethics; societal impact of data; data engineering; and natural language processing. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in College and Department activities, serve on committees, attend faculty meetings and retreats, participate in end-of session activities along with graduation and other meetings that arise, in addition to developing curriculum.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A PhD from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization by 10/6/2025. Candidates who will not hold the degree by this date will not be considered.

  • Applicants for Associate Professor must demonstrate their experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in informatics with a focus on data analytics, in varying modalities (in-person, online, and/or hybrid) and address their plan to contribute to the Informatics curriculum.

  • Applicants for Assistant Professor must demonstrate their experience or potential in teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in informatics with a focus on data analytics, in varying modalities (in-person, online, and/or hybrid) and address their plan to contribute to the Informatics curriculum.

  • Applicants for Associate Professor must demonstrate a record of published scholarship on topics in the field of data analytics, data visualization and big data technologies, requisite for an appointment as Associate Professor in the field of Informatics.

  • Applicants for Assistant Professor must provide evidence of data analytics, data visualization and big data technologies in their existing research program.

  • Applicants for Associate Professor must have experience in applying for and obtaining external funding for their research.

  • Applicants for Assistant Professor must have a demonstrated potential for obtaining external funding for their research.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in data analytics, data visualization and HCI, big data technologies and cloud platforms, with troubleshooting and data tooling skills (data analysis, big data, building analytical models, visualizations).

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the theoretical foundations of data analytics, as well as familiarity with the latest advances in these fields and a variety of data analytics techniques.

  • Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., Python, R).

  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community

  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience collaborating with industry partners on real-world projects.

  • Provide evidence of practical applications of Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

  • Demonstrated ability to teach and develop classes in AI, data analytics, and related subfields

  • Interest /prior research in the intersection of informatics, data analytics and AI/ML.

  • Experience in developing or managing an academic program or collaboration effort.
