Powell Industries, Inc. Automation Engineer II - PSD in Acheson, Alberta

Based out of our Acheson Powell Service Division location, the Automation Engineer II is responsible for applying innovative and creative solutions to solve problems for our clients. Key responsibilities include engineering, testing, maintaining and supporting automation solutions as well as intelligent products in MV/LV switchgear applications.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Become proficient in PAD solutions and offerings

  • Review and interpret client specifications to produce project Functional Design, drawings and test documentation in accordance with the project requirements and Powell standard procedures.

  • Develop relay configuration files using various manufactures such as SEL, GE, Siemens and Beckwith.

  • Design and configure SCADA systems using WonderWare InTouch, Allen Bradley Factory Talk, Copa-Data Zenon, Siemens WinCC, and/or SEL RTAC AcSELerator Diagram Builder

  • Use common industrial communication protocols such as Modbus (RTU and TCP/IP), IEC61850, DNP 3.0, etc.

  • Develop PLC based electrical system monitoring and controls solutions.

  • Participate in and develop documentation for factory and on-site acceptance testing (FAT and SAT respectively), as well as perform start-up and commissioning activities as required.

  • Ensure that the company’s Health, Safety & Environmental policies and procedures are constantly adhered to all aspects of Site Services.

  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

  • BS in a technical discipline, preferably an Electrical Engineer, from an accredited institution with a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or a minimum of 6 years of relevant industry working experience is required.

  • Expertise and experience in at least one of the following is required:

  • Automation and Control systems

  • Protective Relay programming and commissioning

  • PLC applications for Switchgear

  • Experience developing, integrating, installing, and commissioning industrial control systems using PLC and HMI solutions.

  • Experience with PLC logic programming and HMI programming. Experience with Rockwell, Schneider, Siemens, and ABB software a plus.

  • Experience with common industrial protocols such as Modbus (RTU and TCP/IP), IEC61850, DNP3, Profibus, etc.

  • Knowledge of 3 phase power is required.

  • Experience configuring, testing, and commissioning relays. Experience with SEL, GE, and Siemens microprocessor relays is plus.

  • Excellent customer relation, verbal, and written communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and trouble shooting skills.

  • Able to work effectively in a team setting or independently, able to adapt to change, self-starter, innovative, and willing to make a difference.

  • Skilled with Microsoft software such as Excel, Word, and Outlook. Business system experience in Oracle a plus.

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.

  • Knowledge of basic electrical theory and electrical power distribution equipment.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Strong analytical skills, interpersonal skills, and demonstrated excellent leadership skills.

  • Knowledge of applicable electrical codes, standards, and regulation.

  • Must possess a valid driver license with a clean record.

  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal and leadership skills, and ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with customers and team members

  • Apply practical application experience and knowledge of electrical power systems to develop and recommend solutions for customers’ power system issues and upgrades.

  • Familiarity with environmental protection procedures and basic electrical safety practices

  • Make a work site and site activities safe for self and all other members of the site team.

  • Ability to understand documented instructions, procedures and electrical drawings, and develop the same.

  • Well organized.

  • Familiar with test equipment and testing procedures for power delivery.

Working Conditions

  • Willingness and ability to travel 25% of the time

Physical Requirements

  • Be physically capable of lifting, carrying and moving up to 50lbs on a regular basis

  • Able to provide a negative pre-employment drug and alcohol test

  • Able to bend at the waist, the legs at the knees, and extending arms and hands in any direction in a repetitive manner.

  • Maintaining body equilibrium and agility to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, ascending or descending stairs
