Position summary: JMT is seeking a TMC Operator to join the Syracuse, New York office. TMC Operators will monitor the transportation network for issues and respond by making notifications. The TMC operates 12 hours a day, 5 days a week managing traffic day to day as well as during incidents, emergencies and planned events. Position is part time morning shift, approximately 25 hours per week Monday-Friday with occasional extra hours to attend meetings, cover leave, special events and emergencies. Hours for Primary Morning shift: 7:00 am - 12:00. Potential extra coverage of Afternoon shift: 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm.

Essential functions and responsibilities

  • Answering and replying to phone calls and emails with City staff, emergency responders and the general public.
  • Monitoring various sources for traffic related problems, roadway concerns and complaints
    • Telephones
    • Email
    • Closed circuit television (traffic cameras)
    • Police, Fire & EMS radio
    • News
    • Weather
  • Take appropriate action based on standard operating procedures:
    • Monitor the TMC's Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) systems
    • Monitor and report on traffic signal malfunctions and complaints
    • Monitor and report on incidents that impact the transportation network
    • Compile & maintain accurate list/map of construction, special events & incidents impacting traffic
    • Aid in Traffic Incident Management (TIM)
    • Share information and coordinate with appropriate partner offices and agencies
    • Maintain log of all activities

Required Skills
  • Good oral and written communication
  • Ability to perform with minimal supervision
  • Computer/software - including MS Office applications and spreadsheets
  • Basic knowledgeable of local roads and using roadway maps, and roadway elements
  • Ability to read and interpret maps
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to learn the principles, procedures and techniques involved in traffic engineering for incident/congestion management and traffic control. Traffic experience preferred but not required
  • Capable of working well with co-workers and Syracuse staff
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

Required Experience
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency
  • Minimum of two years' experience working with computer systems including Microsoft Office
  • A valid New York State Driver's license is required
  • Familiarity with Syracuse area roads and local geography

Preferred Experience

* Experience using roadway mapping applications, knowledge of roadway elements - specifically local roadways
* Capable of learning to operate TMC's Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) systems (training to be provided).
* Ability to perform with minimal supervision.

Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment, Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
