Position Description

The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County is seeking Engineers-in-Training for the new Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT). These are exciting opportunities for hard-working dedicated individuals eager to join a new department focused on improving and enhancing Nashville’s transportation network. NDOT is seeking qualified engineers-in-training for multiple work assignments related to sidewalks, bikeways, traffic calming and smart city initiatives. These positions will perform a variety of entry level professional engineering duties involving design, construction and/or inspection of municipal projects or work within the planning, installation and maintenance of equipment and control systems.

The Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure delivers a range of services, and the nearly 400 employees work around the clock to ensure a multimodal system that offers choice and better connects neighborhoods, residents, businesses and visitors to the place that they need and want to go to in a safe manner. These employees are responsible for over 2,200 miles of public roadways and rights-of-way, over 6,000 streets, over 300 bridges, 835 traffic signals and over 1,200 miles of bike/sidewalk lanes and much more. Big events in Nashville consist of CMA Festival, Stanley Cup Finals, Titans games, and any number of special events. These require big preparation and big clean-up and the Nashville Department of Transportation employees are up for the challenge.

This is a position that is eligible for a hybrid work schedule and can telecommute.

Typical Duties

  • Assists with preparation of plans, specifications, and cost estimates for various projects.

  • Prepares, reviews and details working drawings.

  • Assists in field surveys to verify collected data.

  • Prepares and reviews engineering computations.

  • Collects engineering data, including in-field traffic and roadway data.

  • Conducts studies and analyses involving street lights, traffic lights, motorized vehicles, parking and other multimodal equipment for technological improvement opportunities.

  • Coordinates with the engineering community to review and approve development related traffic impact studies.

  • Coordinates with developers, contractors, engineers, planners, and other stakeholders for the pre-planning, planning, design, and construction phases of public and private developments within Metro.

  • Assists in identifying solutions to complex traffic problems and explores new technologies and concepts to rectify the issue.

  • Performs engineering related duties.

  • Coordinates project design within the Metro Planning Department and Metro Codes on the building permit review processes to comply with Metro standards and specifications.

  • Investigates construction and design problems.

  • Prepares and reviews specifications, technical reports and provides correspondence.

  • May review the work of engineering technicians.

  • Interacts with other engineering professionals, developers, property owners and the public concerning department projects and related issues.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university.

LICENSED REQUIRED

  • Valid Driver's License

  • Engineer in Training Certification *

*Any employee appointed to this classification shall obtain such certification within six (6) months from the effective date of their appointment as an Engineer in Training.

Failure to meet the certification requirement within a six (6) month period shall result in automatic termination/dismissal.

Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Civil Engineering Degree with concentration on Traffic or Transportation.
