State of Montana Aquatic Habitat Coordinator in Helena, Montana

Special Information: * * Essential duties of this position include support for planning and advancement of aquatic habitat projects. Position will be based out of FWP Headquarters in Helena, MT but will provide support for fisheries managers and biologists statewide. Job duties will be primarily office-based, but there will be opportunities for work in the field. Previous experience with aquatic habitat design and oversight, project management, and budget management is highly desired. A successful Applicant will be subject to a background investigation. Job Duties: · Coordinates with FWP staff and partners on the development, design, and management ofaquatichabitat projectsin accordance withthe Statewide Fish Management Planand FWP priorities. · Facilitates project assessments and plans for habitat projects, incorporating aquatic ecologyexpertiseand technical writing. · Coordinates with Regional Biologists and Fish Managers for local project development. Implements the Department's Statewide Fish Management Plan by takingaquatichabitat project ideas and preparing them for construction. · Coordinates and communicates internally and externally toaccomplishaquatichabitat-based projects and efforts. · Tracks and manages the progress of projects from conceptualization to completion. · Ensures projects are completed efficiently and effectively through internal and external coordination and communicationand ensures projects improve fish habitat while meeting partner commitments and department priorities in a cost-effective manner. Physical and Environmental Demands: * * · Ability to sit or stand forlong periodsof time. · Ability to spendlong periodsof time working at a computer terminal. · Ability to work in environmental extremes. · Willingness to travelasrequired. · Willingness to work varied hours, including evening,weekends, and holidays. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: · Knowledge and working understanding of aquatic and fishery science, including techniques for evaluating fish population size and structure, assessing factors that are limiting to fish populations and evaluating effects of habitat restoration efforts on fishery resources. · Knowledge and working understanding of modern aquatic restoration practices including stream classification systems; stream mechanics; natural channel design; channel reconstruction; stream bank stabilization techniques; riparian vegetation enhancement; design and installation of fish passage structures; design, installation and maintenance of fish screens; and other restoration measures. · Knowledge and understanding of stream permit requirements associated with fish habitat restoration. · Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to: communicate effectively with FWP staff, partners, and landowners, conduct meetings, prepare reports, prepare contract documents, prepare environmental review documents, develop bid documents, and prepare legally binding project agreements. · Project management skills including coordination with other agencies or entities on cooperative projects. · Administrative and organizational skills, including the ability to administer large budgets and complex projects, administer and oversee contracts, and track information. Ability to work effectively within deadlines. · Experience working with state and federal procedures, statutes, policies, guidelines and rules. · Computer skills and working knowledge of Windows software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. · Ability to work within a team and establish and maintain positive working relationships with agency staff, members of the public, other governmental agencies, and private, public, and nongovernmental organizations. · Strong problem-solving skills and a demonstrated competency toward conflict management. Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience): The knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for this position are typically acquired through: · Master’s degree in one of following fields or a related field: natural resource management; fisheries biology; hydrology; fluvial geomorphology; or engineering · 3-4 years of related work experience. · Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
